How to Compost in an Apartment

I so often get asked how I am able to compost in an apartment, and let me tell you, it’s actually quite easy! You just need to choose the right kind of system for your place!

I currently have 3 systems:

By using sealed systems like this you can completely eliminate the compost smell!

Once your food waste has been treated in a compost system it can be easily used in plants or your home garden. You are also able to have your compost collected or you can donate it to your community garden if you find yourself with excess.

I have also made some iPhone X (may need to be resized for other models) wallpapers you can download to set as your phone screensaver to remind you what can/can’t be composted or worm farmed. I will do a whole separate post on worm farms, to go into more detail, but putting in the wrong things can kill your worms or mess up the pH of your composting system.

What Can Be Composted

  • fruit

  • vegetables

  • dairy products

  • meat (this can only be in an indoor system and will require extra compost mix as it is harder for the system to break down)

  • newspaper

  • herbs

  • avocado shells

  • nut shells

  • cotton

  • linen

  • silk

  • hair

  • nail clippings

  • dust

  • pet bedding (from rabbits and rodents)

  • straw

  • hay

  • leaves and plant trimmings

  • grass

  • bread

  • shredded paper

  • napkins

  • paper towels

  • tissues

  • coffee grounds

  • paper

  • tea bags (provided they do not contain plastic)

  • processed foods (without wrappers)

Basically any organic material is able to be composted.

What Can’t Be Composted

  • plastic

  • glass

  • aluminium

  • metal

  • foil

  • staples

  • long twigs and branches

  • pet droppings (from cats/dogs any carnivorous animal)

  • most tea/coffee bags

  • citrus peels (can throw the pH balance depending on your system)

  • glossy/coated paper

  • stickers from fruit/veg

  • any kind of treated wood

  • synthetic fertilisers
